Beaches of Cape Maleas and Vatika

The beaches in the municipal department of Vies (or Vatika), to the west and east of Cape Maleas are varied indeed.

The northernmost, facing west, is the relatively unknown but lovely Marathia. In the bay of Vatika, the turquoise waters of Pouda, Magano and Neratziona in fact form one long continuous sandy beach stretching for five kilometres.

Even though in the centre of town, the beach at Neapoli is clean and well-maintained to a degree that earns it a Blue Flag every year.

Behind the little port of Palaiokastro is the small protected cove of Ammitsa further south is Aspes and Rismari. Set in the striking landscape around Aghia Marina are the beaches of the Petrified Forest.

On the western side facing the Myrtoon Sea is Panayia, perfect for cooling off after a visit to the Cave of Kastania, and futher south are the beaches around Velanidia.

Finally, no one should miss the opportunity of spending a day at the world-famous sandy beach of Simos, on the island of Elafonisos.

Information:
1.Gialos: From the village of Velanidia, drive 800m down to the coastal settlement of Gialos. The beach is right next to the little port.

2.Kalevolos: From Velanidia drive to Gialos then turn right and continue for another 700m.

3.Aghios Pavlos: On the road from Velanidia to Neapolis, turn right after 1.5km down the dirt track leading to Aghios Pavlos. The beach is 3km away.

Panagia-Kastania

“Panagia” beach

Panagia beach is one of the most isolated in the Vatika area.

Its waters are crystal clear and the beach itself consists of both pebble and sand. It is actually two small beaches, one of which is quite secluded.

For visitors wanting to get away from it all, this beach is also picturesque for the contrast between the steep slopes facing the open sea.

Information:
Continue past the village of Kastania towards the cave of Kastania. The beach is 1.5 km away from there.
