The well-known Castle hosted empires which had moments of glory and other empires which fell and inherited the mixture of its civilization with other civilizations and many different names for its big city every year. In this way the Castle City of Monemvasia is for some “The Gibraltar of the East” or “The Castle over the clouds”, “The Castle of Morias” and for some others “The God-saved city” of the Palaeologus of Mystras family or “Menexe Kalesi” (the city of flowers in Turkish).
It is remembered by all for the gorgeous view that looks like it’s “hugging” the blue waters of the Myrtoo Sea and the famous dromikes or diavatika (as you may hear the locals call the arched paths of the Castle), which create a medieval labyrinth of stone-built alleys filled with old mansions of stone and red tiles, lanterns with flowers that gave the Castle the name “city of flowers”.
